Sean Hayes Was "Ashamed" & "Embarassed" During Will & Grace

As far as iconic gay characters go, Will & Grace's Jack Mcfarland immediately springs to mind.

So we were surprised to find out that throughout filming on the 2000s TV Show, the actor that portrayed him, Sean Hayes, had not come out as openly being gay himself.

The hit show centered around celebrating one's sexuality and standing up for equal rights, whether it be gender, sexual orientation, political beliefs or class.

And while being a brilliant advocate for the LGBTI community hiding behind the mask of Jack Mcfarland, it took a little longer for the real Sean Hayes to stand proud in public himself.

In fact it wasn't until 2010 - four years after the show ended that the actor was ready to open up about his sexuality.

The 46-year-old accepted an award at the Outfest Legacy Awards on Sunday and confessed that he is "ashamed and embarrassed" that he did not come out as being gay earlier in life.

“[The press release] said that I took the stereotypical gay sissy and made him human, lovable, flawed and real. While this may be true, I think you should’ve led with flawed because at the time, I was a young, closeted actor having his first taste of a little success and unfortunately, in my mind, my lucky break was inextricably tied to me thinking that I had to stay in the closet in order to keep moving forward,” Hayes said.

“Looking back at my choice to stay silent, I am ashamed and embarrassed. What was I thinking?

"As If any of you had any doubts. I mean, right, could a straight actor ever do this…?”

“When it comes to night’s like tonight and honors like this, I’m consumed with what I didn’t do,” Hayes continued.

“I know I should’ve come out sooner and I’m sorry for that. Especially when I think about the possibility that I might have made a difference in someone’s life.

"I would probably be able to sleep a lot better than I do if I had acted sooner, but such is life.

"We learn our lessons only when we are ready.”

Regardless of how long it took Hayes to feel comfortable and confident with his sexuality in public, we love him for everything he has done.

Hey, even in Will & Grace it took Jack until season two to come out to his own mother...
