Abused Child Asks "Would I Get A Smack If I Told The Truth?"
A Queensland court has heard the gut-wrenching moment a four-year-old child asked her mother if she would get a smack if she admitted to being sexually abused.
The abuse, which happened at the hands of a 70-year-old man, was discovered when the child's mother asked if she had been touched inappropriately.
The tot, who was in the bath at the time, denied the abuse at first, but then asked: "Would I get a smack if I told the truth?"
She then admitted to her mother that, yes, the man had behaved inappropriately toward her; the child later told police that a number of sexual acts had also been carried out.
The unnamed male had been given between two and three hours of unsupervised access to the little girl a week over an undisclosed number of years; when confronted by the mother about the allegations, he told her he'd been "mucking around" and "playing games", according to the Daily Mail.
In a recorded phone conversation between the two, he is heard to say: "F*ck me, I don't know what you're going on about."
As the child couldn't say exactly when or for how long the abuse had been carried out - just saying it happened "all the time" - the jury was forced to choose whether to believe her version of events over the defendant's.
The man, who Judge Helen Bowskill said had shown no remorse, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years imprisonment; it was his first sex conviction.
The young girl is reported to be receiving counselling.
