Husband Attacks Partner On Wedding Night Because He Couldn’t Undo Her Dress

A court was told that Amy Dawson was left fearing for her life after her childhood boyfriend and now husband assaulted her all because he couldn't get her wedding dress off.

Amy Dawson married her long term partner Gavin Golightly in August in County Durham last year.

The newlyweds, who also have a child together, had their wedding reception in a country hotel, where they were due to stay the night.

However, when they returned to the room Amy asked her husband to help her take off her dress. Golightly refused, only to then throw her to the ground and commit a terrifying assault.

Prosecutor Sarah Traynore described the situation,

"At 12.55am, the following morning, they went to their room, which she was helped towards by a night porter. The defendant then tried to undo Ms Dawson’s dress. She received a crochet (to undo the dress with), but the defendant then refused to undo his new wife’s dress."

Amy explained her relationship with Golightly saying, "When I first met Gavin, he was lovely, I couldn't fault him. He was caring and loving, and when we found we were having baby, we were delighted. I fell pregnant after eight months, but almost straight away, Gavin became controlling and manipulative. It was like walking on eggshells. When he lashed out at me on my wedding night, I thought I was going to die. I was terrified. He looked like he was going to kill me."
