Life For SA Transgender Students Is About To Change

Life for transgender students in South Australian schools is set to change forever, thanks to a new policy released by the Education Department.

The policy will act to not only protect the rights of transgender students, but also the legal responsibilities of public schools around the state.

For the first time in South Australia, transgender students will be able to use their preferred names, wear the school uniform of their choice, go to the toilets of their choice, sleep alongside students they identify as their own gender on school camps and play sport alongside their identified gender.

The policy is a major win for parents of transgender students who often don't know what to expect. Public schools will now be able to provide a 'clear' and 'consistent' treatment of students.

The Education Department confirmed the policy only applied to transgender students whose gender identity had been discussed with parents and confirmed by healthy professionals.
