Ever Wanted To Date A Colleague? Here Are The Do's & Don'ts

A Sydney sexologist has weighed in on how best to navigate a romance in the workplace.

Jacqueline Hellyer believes dating colleagues can be tricky and there are a number of golden rules you should follow.

Firstly, you should always steer clear of flirting over work email because the company will be able to access the messages.

"If it's someone else that you work with, you've always got to keep that distance. So do it on your personal phone, not on the office email," Jacqueline said.

Having said that, Jacqueline doesn't recommend keeping your relationship a secret from your boss.

"I just think it's a courtesy just so they know what's going on. You've got to make a personal call - but it is your boss's job to manage the work space," she said.

However, it may be your boss that you have eyes for. If you've ever wanted to date someone in a position of power, you should be aware of the risks.

"I personally don't think it's a good idea that you're in a direct line of reports - so it's someone who's directly your boss, or your boss's boss," Jacqueline said.

"You've got power issues going on there, which isn't going to be healthy for your personal relationships - and then there's issues about favouritism."
