Which Is Better? Spacing Out Chocolate Or Eating It At Once?
With the Easter long weekend upon us there are usually two schools of thought when it comes to eating your Easter chocolate.
You either eat it all in one go, or you space it out over a number of days/weeks/months, picking away at your stash bit by bit.
Dietitian Melanie McGrice told The Glow: “From a kilojoule perspective, you’re going to end up with the same number of kilojoules, so it doesn’t really matter."
“But if you’re having dark chocolate, from an antioxidant perspective it’s better to have a little bit each day.”
One point to the all-at-once approach.
But on the other hand, it could be better to avoid downing it all in one fell swoop because of the immediate effects that amount of chocolate can have on your body.
According to dietitian and nutritionist Sanchia Parker: “As the glucose gets absorbed quickly our energy levels crash, making us tired and sluggish. What do we reach for when we are tired and sluggish?… Generally, we reach for unhealthier options to pep us back up again."
But also, everyone's mantra seems to be "eat anything in moderation", and this is for a good reason.
“When we mindlessly eat, not only does it mean we end up eating more, but also it doesn’t benefit our relationship with food. It’s fine to eat sweet foods, but the key is to enjoy them mindfully and savour them, which helps build a more positive relationship with our food,” Parker told The Glow.
“Looking forward to a treat during the day can help us stay on track with healthy eating plans, as we don’t feel deprived,” she said.
Do what you will this Easter, and have a happy one!
