Study Finds Beer Is Better Pain Killer Than Paracetamol

It may not come as a surprise to anyone who's knocked back a few drinks as 'hair of the dog' when you have a headache, but a new study has found that drinking two beers actually has a better and more powerful pain-killing effect than popping two common paracetamol tablets.

The study at the University of Greenwich in the UK (We would have loved to have been part of THIS experiment!) found that two standard beers are comparable to mild opioids and can actually cut pain discomfort by up to a quarter.

This level is achieved by raising your blood alcohol content to around 0.08%.

Obviously the study, highlighted the fact that long-term alcohol misuse has negative health consequences and that alcohol in its current consumer form is absolutely not a recommended alternative to traditional medicine.

"Findings suggest that alcohol is an effective analgesic that delivers clinically-relevant reductions in ratings of pain intensity, which could explain alcohol misuse in those with persistent pain, despite its potential consequences for long-term health."

"[Alcohol] can be compared to opioid drugs such as codeine and the effect is more powerful than paracetamol."

"If we can make a drug without the harmful side-effects, then we could have something that is potentially better than what is out there at the moment."

We'll drink to that!
