Road Trip Games To Play This Long Weekend

So, you packed everything, checked the tyre pressure, filled up and you've hit the road.

But OH GOD, THE iPAD DIDN'T CHARGE AND THE KIDS ARE ABOUT TO HAVE A MELTDOWN.

Here are some games you can play on a road trip this weekend.  Or to avoid awkward moments on dates.  Or if the movie at the cinema is a bit boring.  Up to you.

I Spy

The classic.  One person chooses something within eyeshot and says "I spy with my little eye, something that begins with (the first letter of the thing they chose)".  Everyone takes turns guessing the mystery thing until either someone gets it or Dad tells everyone to shut up.

Alphabet Games

These games revolve around working your way through a topic one letter at a time.

Depending on the people in your car, you could try:

  • Australian places
  • Famous people
  • Other words for love
  • Sports
  • Things you don't want to put down your pants

For extra credit, you can try memory alphabet games, where you need to repeat all the answers that came before you before adding your answer.  The came continues until you get back to the starting letter, no one can think of something for "X", or Dad has to stop to pee.

20 Questions

Someone picks a random thing, and the other people have to figure out what it is in less than 20 questions.  They can only be yes/no questions.  When someone guesses what it is, they get to go next, and the game continues until everyone has had a go or Dad says he's not playing this dumb game.

Spot Bug

This one might be more difficult, as you don't see too many VW's on the road nowadays.  You could pick another type of car, I suppose, but it won't be the same.  Every time you see a VW Beetle, you point at it and yell "SPOT BUG" and receive 1 victory point.  The game continues until someone reaches a target, or Dad bans the game because someone changed it to "Punch Buggy".

Would you rather

Someone gives 2 options and then everyone discusses what they'd choose.

eg: Would you rather have feet for hands or hands for feet?

Would you rather be able to fly 2m above the ground or be able to burrow through the ground like Bugs Bunny?

Would you rather own a McDonalds or be given a bucket of KFC every morning?

The weirder (and comparable) the options the better.

The game continues until Dad asks "Would you rather eat through your butt or poop out your mouth" and everyone stops talking to him.

HEY COW!

Oh man, how have I only just heard about this one!  I'm crying actual tears.  Taking it in turns, every time you see a paddock of cows, someone gets to wind down the window and yell "HEY COW!" while the others in the car count the number of cows who turn their head to look at you.  1 point per cow.  This game never ends.  In fact, Dad will play it in the city.

Continuous

A topic is selected, someone starts and everyone has to link the previous answer to their answer.

It could be the last letter of the previous answer has to be the first letter of the next answer - cities, people's names, movies etc.

If if you're feeling adventurous, you could try WHOLE WORDS with song lyrics: "Happy birthday to you" > "You are my sunshine" > "Shiny happy people holding hands" etc.

Wheel of Fortune

Before you head off, write your name on the outside of one of the wheels in chalk, and an arrow on the mudflap.  Every time you stop for a bite or petrol, whoever's name is closest to the arrow wins.  Probably chocolate.  The game continues till you get to your destination or Dad cheats by moving the car slightly forward at the petrol pump to win, but accidentally hits the car in front.

6 degrees of Kevin Bacon

Classic.  Someone names an actor, and eveyone has 6 steps to link that person through their co-stars, to World's Greatest Actor Kevin Bacon.  Someone with imdb on their phone can fact check.  Hint: A Few Good Men is a great linking film.  The game continues until your Dad is Kevin Bacon.
