Jarryd Hayne Announces His NFL Retirement

Jarryd Hayne has announced his retirement from the NFL to chase an Olympic dream with the Fifi Rugby Sevens team.

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday morning that he will be hanging up his running back boots.

Hayne, a former NRL superstar, has played league for Fiji before and met with the country's sevens teams when they were playing at the Sydney world series tournament earlier this year.

He will join up with the Fiji team later on today ahead of this weekends London Sevens, the last tournament before the Rio Olympics in August.

The 49ers sent a lengthy statement from Hayne explaining his decision saying ''The past 12 months with the San Francisco 49ers have been absolutely incredible.

“I could not have predicted how far I have come as an NFL player.

“To not only be able to play in a game but also say that I started a game in the NFL is something that I will remember for a lifetime.

“I am retiring from the NFL because the Fiji rugby sevens team reached out to me about the opportunity to join the team for the upcoming Olympics, and I simply could not pass that chance up.''

Fiji sevens coach Ben Ryan welcomed the 28-year-old on board but has warned Jarryd there are no guarantees he will be selected for the London tournament or the Olympics.
