Police Now Officially Treating NYC Shooting As Terror Attack
This morning we heard word of a shooting that occurred in the New York area of Tribeca after a white van mowed down pedestrians and opened fire.
As of the most recent reports, eight people have been confirmed dead, with at least 15 injured.
Speaking at a press conference alongside NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the mayor said:
“Based on the information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror. Aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them.”
Cuomo added: “At this point there is no evidence to suggest a wider plot or a wider scheme, but the actions of one individual who meant to cause pain and harm.”
There have also been reports that the man responsible was heard yelling, “Allahu Akbar” as the attack ensued.
It is possible that there is a link to ISIS, though, they're yet to officially take responsibility.
According to a report on the Mirror, tyre marks could be visibly seen on the bodies of at least two of the victims.
Witnesses reported hearing as many as 15 gunshots fired after the second crash.
The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, is heading to the scene and insists there is "no active threat".
