SA Pathology Announces A Major Restructure
SA Pathology staff have been left shocked after SA Health announced it’s preparing to cull 278 jobs. The news follows a consultant’s report by Ernst and Young which suggested cutting the workforce by 332 would create an annual saving of $42.2 million.
A SA Health spokesman said 278 positions is just the "starting point".
“We are talking to staff and unions about before implementation is complete," The Advertiser reports.
The report found pathology costs in SA were almost 50 per cent higher than the industry-accepted benchmark. It also found SA Pathology had failed to deliver planned savings and productivity improvements.
Staff were notified of the major restructure today. The changes to services include “core laboratories” being made available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in metropolitan hospitals. This would mean a sample could be received, processed and the results reported within two hours.
