Tragedy As 73-Year-Old Woman Accidentally Kills Husband

The death of an elderly Melbourne man in his own driveway was due to "a series of unfortunate events", according to local police.

It's understood that the 75-year-old was accidentally struck by his wife while investigating a noise coming from their car at the couple's property in Melbourne's southeast.

The man, who, it's believed, had been behind the wheel, got out of the Nissan SUV and asked his 73-year-old wife to rev the car, not realising it was still in gear; the vehicle, which was parked in the driveway facing the road, then lurched forward, hitting the man and crashing into a property opposite.

Heartbreakingly, other residents at Ash Court in Clayton South have revealed that they found the grief-stricken woman cradling her injured husband, crying that she had "killed... my darling, my sweetheart."

"I heard a thump and a scream," Andrew Boyadjian said. "I saw this neighbour or ours on the road not moving.

"And his wife was kneeling next to him crying her heart out.

"She was saying: 'Darling, please don't die, please don't die.'

"It's very sad."

Another neighbour described the father and grandfather as "like family", saying: "I'm going to miss him because he was like a father to me.

"They treat me like their son. I'm going to miss him as a dad.

"They're really beautiful people."

Acting Senior Sergeant Janine Saunders said that the man's wife was assisting them with their inquiries, but that appeared to be "a tragic accident."

"It's just a series of unfortunate events," she said. "She is traumatised.

"It's just really unfortunate."

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
