Up To Fifty Injured As Masked Gunman Takes Cinema Hostage
An armed and masked man has been shot dead by German special police officers after storming a cinema complex in the Hesse region.
The gunman took several hostages, all of whom were not injured.
A number of people inside the cinema were injured when police deployed CS gas, according to reports.
Police said there is no indication of the motives of the shooter, who entered the complex at 3pm local time, just after the first movies of the day started screening.
The cinema had been showing The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland and the comedy Central Intelligence.
It is believed the gunman was wearing a balaclava and carrying combat boots and a 'long weapon' with an ammunition belt over his shoulder.
Witnesses say he fired four shots when he entered the cinema.
The interior minister for the state of Hesse, Peter Beuth, said the special police forces had 'fought and killed' the gunman.
German newspaper Bild reported that a hand grenade and an explosive belt were found next to the mans body but it is not known if they were real or fake.
