http://www.mix1023.com.au/entertainment/diamond-bought-for-26-7-million-at-christies-auction-house

Prestigious jeweller Harry Winston, which was acquired earlier this year by Swatch Group, has bought a colourless, flawless 101.73-carat diamond for a record $26.7 million at an auction in Geneva, auction house Christie's said.

Christie's representative Raul Kadakia told reporters after the sale Harry Winston was the buyer of the diamond that on Wednesday evening smashed the previous auction-price record for a diamond in its category by more than $10 million.

"Twenty-three million (Swiss) francs! Your last chance! Twenty-three million, sold!" shouted Francois Curiel, the head of Christie's jewellery division shouted, referring to the $23.5 million price before tax and commission, and clinching the deal in front of some 150 people gathered for the auction at a luxury Geneva hotel.

As the first ever buyer of the diamond, Harry Winston had the privilege of naming it and decided to call it "Winston Legacy", Kadakia said, pointing out this was the diamond dealer's first major purchase since it was snapped up by the world's leading watchmaker for $1 billion in March.

The American Institute of Gemology has handed the Harry Legacy the top colourless grade "D" and the best clarity grade, "flawless", which is characterised by its "absolute symmetry", according to Christie's.

The diamond, sold by a diamond merchant, was 236 carats in the rough when extracted from the Jwaneng mine in Botswana, before it was meticulously sculpted for 21 months, Christie's said.

The previous auction-price record-holder in the category was the 84.37-carat Chloe round diamond, snapped up at a Sotheby's auction in Geneva in 2007 by Guess Jeans founder Georges Marciano for $16.2 million.
She is still alive with the sound of music, but a Julie Andrews show these days is more of the spoken word variety.

In Australia for the first time, the 77-year-old superstar will tour the country with a show that trades her songs for personal stories.

Andrews has not sung in public since her return to stage in London four years ago when her performance was panned and she later dismissed her efforts as "speak singing".

The Grammy-winning singer, whose voice could once span four octaves, has been unable to reach her natural range since a botched operation on her vocal chords in 1997.

Talking at a press conference in Sydney, Andrews admitted the decision to finally retire her voice was a challenge.

"To be honest it was very tough as singing with a symphony orchestra is one of the greatest turn-ons in life. It's wonderful," she said.

"But I thought 'well I can't just sit here and do nothing and I must occupy my time and just see what happens'."

As well as applying her voice to animated films Despicable Me and Shrek, Andrews paved a career as a children's author and says writing is now her favourite pursuit.

Her books, including Julie Andrews' Collection of Poems, Songs and Lullabies and The Great American Mousical, are packed with music and maintain her connection to younger audiences.

Andrews was turned on to the idea of writing by her daughter Emma, and the pair have since co-authored several successful publications, including The Very Fairy Princess which reached No.1 on the New York Times Best Seller List for Children's Books.

"I was bemoaning my fate one day and saying how I miss it and my daughter looked at me and said 'mum you've just found a different way of using your voice' and it was phenomenal, the weight just fell off my shoulder and I realised there is more than one way to communicate," Andrews says.

"We package our books with as much music as we can.. and to my total delight I think four of the books we've written have been developed for either the theatre or film or symphony.

"I feel utterly blessed. It was something I would never have thought of doing if I'd carried on singing."

Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music will inevitably be the centrepieces of her Evening With Julie Andrews tour, but Andrews is just as proud of later films like The Americanization of Emily, Hawaii and SOB, in which she controversially exposed her breasts.

Andrews says her squeaky clean image has at times been over-emphasised.

Her Australian shows will also include unseen footage and untold anecdotes, offering insights into her major stage and film productions and her marriage to Blake Edwards.

She says family and a strong work ethic have been the cornerstones of her stellar career.

"A lot of people say `oh you're so disciplined' but discipline is the foundation that leads me to fly," says Andrews.

"If I really know what I'm doing I can soar and I've got that strength underneath. I've been at it an awful long time, really since I was eight travelling around England, and I think one thing you do learn is that you'd better do your homework."

* An Evening With Julie Andrews tours nationally from May 18 to May 31.

http://www.mix1023.com.au/entertainment/kfc-comes-to-gaza-via-smugglers-tunnels

Junk-food starved Gazans can now order Kentucky Fried Chicken to go thanks to a new smuggling service which brings takeaways from Egypt via a network of underground tunnels.

It's not exactly "fast" - taking several hours to arrive, with the Palestinian delivery company behind it charging hefty prices to cover the cost of fuel and transport.

"Last chance to order for the Thursday 6pm delivery is Wednesday night," says the Yamama delivery firm on its Facebook page.

Yamama then orders the meals, about 30 on a typical run, from the KFC outlet in the Egyptian city of El-Arish, some 40km away.

"We place the order with the restaurant in El-Arish, then drive it in a car to the Egyptian side of Rafah," said Yamama director Khalil al-Ifranji.

"Someone takes it from there through the tunnels to (Gazan) Rafah. They then drive it to our headquarters (in Gaza City)."

Motorbikes then deliver the food, with the entire process taking three to four hours.

Fast food is just the latest trend for smugglers seeking to turn a buck by bringing in hard-to-get products to the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007.

Tight restrictions on Gazans entering Egypt mean those with a craving for chicken cooked to Colonel's Secret Recipe can't just pop over the border and pick up a bucket.

Instead, some residents seem quite happy to shell out 130 shekels ($A35) for just 20 pieces of fried chicken - double what it costs in El-Arish.

There are no international fast food chains in Gaza.

"There are many orders," said Ifranji.

"People can't travel regularly, and those who've tried this food really miss it. Those who haven't, dream of it."

For Iyad Jaber, it's a great idea.

"Whenever a KFC advert's on TV, my wife tells me she wants to go to Egypt and have some," says the 34-year-old civil servant.

When his wife heard Yamama advertising its new KFC smuggling service on the radio, she demanded he get some, saying she would wait forever if they saved up for a trip to El-Arish.

Yamama launched the service just three weeks ago after several friends came back from El-Arish with a KFC meal and suggested turning it into a business venture.

Since then, the number of bulk orders placed by the firm has been steadily climbing, due to popular demand.

http://www.mix1023.com.au/entertainment/david-beckham-retires-end-it-like-beckham

Just a week after Alex Ferguson announced his decision to retire, the most famous of 'Fergie's Fledglings', David Beckham, revealed that he was to hang up his boots at the end of the 2012-13 season, aged 38.

Beckham, who has enjoyed a glittering playing career, bows out at the highest level, with a four-month stint at Paris Saint-Germain proving to be his swansong.

Fittingly, the former England captain managed to add one more winners' medal to his collection in that time, making nine appearances to help PSG win the French Ligue 1 title for the first time since 1994.

But when PSG signed Beckham in January, they did so more for the value he could bring off the field than on it - he is someone who has carefully nurtured his public image ever since his days as a fresh-faced youngster at Manchester United.

Proud family man, fashion guru, friend of A-list celebrities and politicians - even gay icon - the 38-year-old midfielder is as much known for his activities off the pitch as his pinpoint passing, tireless running and deadly free-kicks on it.

Beckham has risen from a modest background in Leytonstone, east London, to become one of the most marketable figures in world sport, aided by a high-profile marriage to former Spice Girl, turned fashion designer, Victoria Adams.

As a talented youngster, he declined to sign with his local side Tottenham Hotspur and instead joined Ferguson's Manchester United, becoming the heart of a side that included Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil and Gary Neville and Nicky Butt.

He made his debut at 17 and truly stamped his arrival in the English top-flight with an audacious goal from the halfway line in a match against Wimbledon on the opening day of the 1996-7 season.

In eight years at Old Trafford, he collected six Premier League crowns and the 1999 Champions League, making him one of the most recognisable - and bankable - sportsmen in Britain.

Yet his time at the top was not without controversy: he became a hate figure for some at the 1998 World Cup when he was sent off for a petulant kick at Diego Simeone during England's last-16 defeat against Argentina in France.

His reputation was only restored with a breathtaking last minute free-kick in England's final World Cup qualifying match against Greece in 2001 and subsequent penalty winner against Argentina at the 2002 finals.

YouTube user @adidas

A well-publicised bust-up with Ferguson over his commitment to the game had by that time led to a 35-million-euro move to Real Madrid, where his increasingly global reputation saw an explosion in replica jersey sales, notably in Asia.

He was even the inspiration for the hit British film "Bend It Like Beckham", about a Punjabi-origin schoolgirl in west London who dreams of playing football like her idol, against her conservative parents' wishes.

Beckham dropped a bombshell in 2007 when he announced a shock multi-million dollar move to LA Galaxy.

In the United States, his popularity helped drive up interest and attendances at Major League Soccer, which the Galaxy won in 2011 and again last year.

During his time in the States, Beckham had two loan spells at AC Milan before a serious Achilles injury deprived him a chance for a last appearance at the World Cup in 2010, leaving his caps total on 115 - a record for an outfield English player.

According to the Sunday Times' rich list, Beckham's estimated net worth in April 2012 was STG190 million ($A294 million) yet even then, at an age when he could understandably retire, he was still being coveted by clubs the world over.

Beckham missed out on playing for the Great Britain team at the Olympics he helped bring to his home city last year but still played a starring role, driving a speedboat with the Olympic flame to the stadium before a global audience of millions.

Desperate to improve their own international image, PSG jumped at the chance to be associated with the Beckham brand, and the possibility of him extending his stay for another year was floated before he decided the time was right to call it a day.

Here's a secret the paparazzi will love - Joshua Jackson and girlfriend Diane Kruger go skinny dipping together!

The former 'Dawson's Creek' star and the model-turned-actress - who have been in a relationship since 2006 - enjoy swimming nude together and always splash around in their outdoor pool when the summer months kick in.

Speaking to E! News at a celebration event of designer Prabal Gurung, Diane, 36, said: "Well, I prefer to go (swimming) naked, but we have a pool, and actually our house is sort of in the middle of nowhere, so skinny dipping is still an option!"

A seemingly embarrassed Joshua swiftly turned his lover's revelation into a joke, saying: "Well, not anymore!"

German beauty Diane - who has residences in both Paris and Vancouver with the 34-year-old actor - recently admitted she wasn't initially attracted to Joshua and actually couldn't wait for their first date to be over.

Speaking previously, she said: "It was the worst evening we have ever spent together. Our first date was a real disaster. The worst thing was that he even tried to kiss me when he had taken me home. I said, 'Are you kidding me?' And then I rushed out of the car!"

Isla Fisher was once mistaken for her husband Sacha Baron Cohen's daughter.

The petite 'Great Gatsby' actress - who wed the comedian in 2010 after an eight-year romance - was mortified when a party host mistook her for the funnyman's teenage daughter at one of her first ever Hollywood parties.

Isla, 37, recalled: "When I first came to Hollywood, I went with Sacha to a very big party for 'Lost In Translation'. When we pulled up, everyone you could imagine was in this room, Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman...

"This lady came straight up to me, introduced herself as Colleen and then turned to me and said, 'Come with me, I've got something to show you.' I'm thinking, 'Oh my God. I'm so excited.'

"So she takes me away from Sacha and opens this door and there's this giant pink room covered in kids' posters and there in the middle is a group of 14-year-old girls and she said, 'Everybody, this is Sacha's daughter,' and asked me if I wanted a soft drink. Clearly I should have worn more make-up!"

Isla has since settled down with Sacha and the couple have daughters Olive, five, and Elula, two, and the 37-year-old actress admits becoming a parent is one of the best things in life.

She added to Stylist magazine: "I think the most romantic thing you can ever do is to make a family with someone. I love being a mum and it's my favourite topic personally, but professionally I hate talking about it."

As The Office airs its series finale after eight years on the US network NBC, the time feels right to salute the show that spawned it.

This is, of course, the BBC-produced, British version of The Office, starring a previously unknown scamp named Ricky Gervais, who also served as its co-creator, co-writer and co-director.

For viewers who stumbled on that scruffy, off-kilter little comedy way back in 2001, The Office was a sensation and its doughy leading man someone clearly worth watching.

Soon it gave rise to the US version, which premiered in March 2005 and concludes Thursday in the US with a 75-minute finale that will gather the cast along with guest stars, past regulars and maybe even Steve Carell (the network isn't saying for sure), who left as series lead two seasons ago.

Transplanting The Office to American soil was an exacting business.

The forlorn workplace of Wernham Hogg Paper Co in its grey London suburb was transformed to the not-quite-so-dreary regional branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper Co in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Carell was tapped as the crisp, chirpy doofus-in-charge. His character, Michael Scott, a man of grating foolishness, emerged as a sleeker version of British forbear David Brent, who, as played by Gervais, was a rapacious joke-spinning narcissist with a cajoling grin and wild delusions of charm.

Ever eager for approval, Michael Scott saw his supervisory role as that of "a chilled-out entertainer".

But for Brent, entertaining his minions was a sacred charge indivisible from any practical accomplishments.

"When people say 'Would you rather be thought of as a funny man or a great boss'?" Brent once explained, "my answer is the same: To me, they're not mutually exclusive."

With his cringe-inducing loutishness, Brent was often painful for the viewer to take. So was the rest of the show, where an air of desperation gnawed at the employees, trapped as they were by their dead-end jobs and obligatory contact with their overwhelming boss.

The British The Office rocked viewers with just 12 half-hours soon followed by a pair of hour-long sequels.

By contrast, the Yank Office has always been more soft-hearted and digestible.

Consider the mating of Pam, who began the series' run as the sweet, wallflowerish receptionist, with Jim, the sensitive sales rep who secretly adored her.

These characters were direct counterparts of Dawn and Tim from the original (played by Lucy Davis and Martin Freeman), who were cruelly kept at arm's length until the series' final moments. But the relationship between Pam and Jim (played by Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski), progressed steadily into flirtation and dating, then marriage and parenthood, with the occasional tiff and re-declaration of love. A major through-line for this show has been their romance.

At the same time, the show stayed faithful to the fundamental precept of the original series: Here was a documentary film crew shooting wage slaves at their workplace.

This was the device that set The Office apart from other comedies. The original series looked like nothing that had come before, and dared to satirise a media-beset world most people were only beginning to acknowledge. This was 2001, which predated the full onslaught of reality shows. There were no iPhones. Self-generated video was in its infancy and there was still no place to put it: There was no YouTube yet.

However exotic, the premise of The Office resonated with the viewers' own latent narcissism - their appetite for playing to any camera pointed at them. The breakthrough message of The Office: We are all David Brents by way of Michael Scott.

Of course, the premise had great comic payoff. Introducing this "meta" component gives any comedy a self-referential streak, a postmodern knowingness that can be mined for laughs. Characters can step outside the action to react for the camera (and the audience beyond) with a grin or wink or roll of the eyes. Characters directly addressing the camera provide a forum for bonus wisecracks. No wonder within a few years, the "mockumentary" format was adopted by Parks and Recreation and Modern Family.

Except these days, unlike in 2001 when The Office was born, being caught on TV is a normal state for all of us. Everyone is liable to be on TV most any time or place, if only from surveillance cameras planted everywhere. We are routinely exposed and exposing ourselves.

At the end of last week's episode, the gang from The Office was happy (if nervous) about seeing the results of their years of exposure by the documentary crew: Arrayed in front of TVs at a local bar, they were about to watch The Office: An American Workplace as it finally hit the air.

But simply being on camera isn't always enough.

It hasn't been nearly enough for Andy Bernard. Ignoring the advice of his Dunder Mifflin colleagues, Andy recently resigned his job as a Scranton regional manager to chase his fantasy of show-biz stardom.

As played by Ed Helms, Andy is a chap of unrivalled stupidity and cluelessness even in this crowd of oddballs. But he spoke eloquently for a fame-obsessed culture as he prepared to leave the office in pursuit of his dreams.

"Every minute that I spend here," he told his co-workers, "is time NOT spent making audition videos for reality, dating, cooking or singing shows. I am pursuing fame of any kind. I owe it to myself and my future fans."

Trouble is, in this media-glutted world, Andy's "future fans", whoever they might be, are probably consumed with finding fame of their own.
Japanese star chef Miki Nozawa was killed on the German holiday island of Sylt following an alleged dispute with two disgruntled guests about a dish of fried noodles.

The 57-year-old died on Monday as a result of his injuries in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, said Ulrike Stahlmann-Liebelt, the senior public prosecutor from the nearby town of Flensburg.

The results of the autopsy establishing the cause of death were not yet available, Stahlmann-Liebelt said Tuesday.
Two suspects aged 36 and 50, reportedly skilled workers, are still at large.

Local media reports say the dispute centred on a dish of fried noodles with vegetables and beef.

The Sylt Rundschau newspaper said the two suspects asked for their money back saying they didn't like the way the food was prepared.

The news website Bild.de reported that the two then disappeared without paying.

Later that night Nozawa, who was regarded as a specialist in Japanese-Italian fusion food, met the two again in a local table-dance bar, where the dispute escalated.

The cook was taken to the hospital with severe brain injuries and internal bleeding, Nozawa's former wife told the Sylt Rundschau.
Christina Hendricks gets dressed up at home for her husband.

The 'Mad Men' star says she couldn't possibly wear tracksuit bottoms or casual attire in front of Geoffrey Arend - her spouse of three years - because she feels it's her duty to please him by looking glamorous and sexy.

Christina told Lucky magazine: "I can't do that to my husband [wear tracksuit bottoms], not after just three years of marriage. At home, I put on a low-cut caftan (dress), and he's like, 'Babe, you look great.' "

What would you never be caught wearing in front of your partner?

The 38-year-old actress admits playing her character, Joan Harris, in the advertising drama has taught her how to pull off sexy styles that suit her curvy frame but she still relies on the honesty of her friends and husband to let her know when she's not looking her best.

She explained: "I'm lucky to have really good friends around me and a great husband that are like, 'No, no, no, that one's not going to work.' "

The gorgeous redhead insists that she struggles to cope with the attention she gets and has to remind herself regularly to pretend that she knows the people that are staring at her.

She said: "Just walk down the hall and try to imagine that you everyone is looking at you."

Photo: Rod Stewart greets fans at a book signing for Rod: The Autobiography (Andrew Milligan/PA Wire)

Rod Stewart was "addicted to steroids" even though they made his penis shrink.

The I Don't Want to Talk About It hitmaker has admitted he became reliant on the drug to help soothe his vocal cords ahead of gigs, but the habit had a number of nasty side-effects, including reducing the size of his manhood.

In an interview with Mojo magazine, he said: "I let myself down on tours in the late 80s when I was addicted to steroids. In those days we didn't have in-ear monitors and the band kept getting louder and drunker, and I kept blowing my voice out. The steroids will take down the swelling in any membrane - including your knob - and it's what you do when you're in a bit of a pinch and need to do a show and you can't sing."

Despite the benefit to his voice, the 68-year-old rocker says the drugs made him "bloated" and had more serious repercussions when he suffered from internal bleeding.

He explained: "Steroids make you fat and bloated, you can't sleep and you get really irritable. It's one of the most horrible drugs in the world. One night, on stage in Sheffield, I thought I was in the kitchen with my mum because the steroids had eaten a hole in my stomach. I was bleeding internally and hallucinating. What the audience must have thought!"

Rod - who has overcome thyroid cancer - still uses steroids around "once a year" to help him through a particularly challenging performance, however, he feels the after-effects for days.

He added: "I will still use them around once a year if I'm really struggling. It gets you through the show, but you pay for it. You can't sing for a week."
The View host admitted on the show to having her ovaries removed after the passing of her sister from ovarian cancer in 1985.

Walters said of the decision: "It’s not like having the breasts because people don’t see it. But it’s a decision you have to make — it’s preventative."

"What I think with Angelina Jolie - she’s such a sex symbol and we associate sex with breasts. And the fact that she did this and has retained her beauty and her sexuality.

"I think it was brave of her, she did it for her own health, but it was so brave to write about it. A women’s sexuality is not tied up with her breasts.”

A South African safari firm says it has sacked a guide who caused an internet storm when video of him drunkenly charging an elephant went viral.

The Singita Game Reserve said the man, initially thought to be a tourist, was in fact an off-duty field guide and was "no longer employed by the reserve".

"Further disciplinary procedures are in progress with regard to others involved," it added.

The footage, posted on wildlife site latestsightings.com showed a clearly inebriated man charging towards the startled animal.

With friends cheering and encouraging him, the man runs at the elephant, which initially swings its trunk towards him, but soon beats a retreat.

"We cannot stress enough that the behaviour displayed in this video completely contradicts Singita's guiding ethos and values toward conservation and wildlife preservation," the reserve said.

Wild animals in the two-million-hectare park sometimes attack visitors, and elephants have been known to overturn the cars of sightseers.
