Julia Zemiro’s grand plan for Adelaide Cabaret Festival
Julia Zemiro is the Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and her passion for the event was totally obvious when she joined Jodie and Soda in the Mix102.3 studio on Wednesday.
Zemiro has been responsible for booking more than 50 acts for the “biggest cabaret festival in the world” which happens in June this year, and her first headline act is German songstress Ute Lemper.
“Ute Lemper is a huge cabaret star. German born, lives in New York, she adores the Adelaide Festival, she hasn’t been in here a long time,” Julia said.
“I made a video of me speaking in French and German to lure her over the line. Just to show her we speak different languages here and we’re on top of it and know what we’re doing.
“She’s doing the show based on a three-hour phone call she had with German actress and singer) Marlene Dietrich. She’s never spoken about it before on stage and this is a show built around it.”
The artist grabbing Jodie’s attention was Megan Mullally, who most people would know as Karen Walker on Will and Grace. But at the festival it will be a very different show.
“I saw her on Broadway in Young Frankenstein the musical, and I thought wow I didnt know you could sing and dance and move,” Julia said.
“She trained as a ballet dancer. I think she once said ‘my breasts just got too big, I was never going to be a ballet dancer’ but she is a beautiful performer. She’s teamed up with a fabulous performer called Stephanie Hunt and they’ve created this wonderful show called Nancy and Beth. They do fabulous cabaret songs in different styles all with choreography and a band. It’s going to sell out.”
Julia also had the choice of venues and with the Adelaide Festival Centre unavailable, she had no hesitation in booking the Thebarton Theatre as its “art deco perfection for cabaret”.
“Every theatre from the tiny theatre from the big theatre will be filled with cabaret and that’s very rare and people love to perform at it,” Julia said.
Julia also teased her own performance at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, saying “of course I am going to perform but in a way you might not expect. All will be announced in April at the official launch.”
The Adelaide Cabaret Festival is on from 7-22 June. First release shows are now on sale. Go to www.adelaidecabaretfestival.com.au.
