Thursday, September 08, 2011

The 1990s saw our musical tastes evolve like no other decade previously. At the start of the '90s grunge rock almost killed of its big-hair counterpart and as the millennium approached, both hip-hop and dance music had crossed over into the mainstream.

Rolling Stone magazine recently surveyed its readers to determine the Top Ten worst songs from the '90s.

Here is what they came up with:

10. 4 Non Blondes, What's Up?

9. Right Said Fred, I'm Too Sexy

8. Baha Men, Who Let The Dogs Out?

7. Celine Dion, My Heart Will Go On

6. Hanson, MMMBop

5. Chumbawamba, Tubthumping

4. Vanilla Ice, Ice Ice Baby

3. Billy Ray Cyrus, Achy Breaky Heart

2. Los Del Rio, Macarena

1. Aqua, Barbie Girl

#10 - 4 Non Blondes - What's Up? (1992)

Possibly a surprise inclusion for many. It reached number 1 on the singles charts in 8 countries. Lead singer Linda Perry later went on to co-write a number of Pink's hits.

#9 - Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy (1991)

The first of many one hit wonders on the list. Right Said Fred became the first artists since The Beatles to top the charts in the USA with their debut single.

#8 - Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out? (2000)

This song won a Grammy Award in 2001. The group featured rapper Pitbull who emerged in the late '00s as a superstar in his own right.

#7 - Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On (1997)

The theme song from the movie Titanic. It proved to be Celine Dion's biggest hit and is one of the highest ever selling singles of all time having shifted over 15 million copies!

#6 - Hanson - MMMBop (1997)

The debut single from the 3 Hanson brothers proved to be their biggest hit. It topped the charts in 12 countries.

#5 - Chumbawamba - Tubthumping (1997)

One of the stranger acts to top the charts, Cumbawamba broadcast their strong anarchist and political leanings in their song lyrics. The band turned down a $1.5 million offer from Nike to license this song for a World Cup advert.

#4 - Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby (1990)

Sampling the bassline from the Queen/David Bowie song Under Pressure, Vanilla Ice never came close to replicating this chart success though he still tours on the back of it, playing concerts in Australia as recently as 2009.

#3 - Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart (1992)

The tune singlehandedly responsible for starting the line-dancing craze in Australia. Cyrus also sported one of the greatest mullets of all time. He is better known these days for being the father of Miley Cyrus.

#2 - Los Del Rio - Macarena (1995)

This song from Spain inspired its own dance and at its peak there were both Spanish and English versions in the Top 40. The dance itself is still taught in some Australian primary schools as part of the P.E. curriculum!

#1 - Aqua - Barbie Girl (1997)

According to the survery this Danish/Nowegian band are responsible for the worst song of the '90s! Back then it still managed to reach #1 in 12 countries.

So there you have it, the Top Ten worst songs from the 90's. Has our taste improved since then?

Ironically all but one of these songs reached top spot on the Australian singles charts - 4 Non Blondes just missed out by only getting to #2.

What songs from the '90s do you think should have been on this list?
