Disturbing news has emerged from central Indonesia after reports that a local woman had been swallowed whole by a seven-metre-long python.
54-year-old Wa Tiba had gone missing from her village on Muna Island in Southeast Sulawesi province on Thursday evening and was last heard from when she went to check on her vegetable garden.
The woman’s family went searching for her but only managed to locate a few of her belongings, including sandals and a torch in the garden.
The entire village then launched a search for Ms Tiba and this is when they discovered a snake about 50 metres away from where her belongings were discovered, with a bloated belly.
The village chief, Faris, said that the snake was killed and brought back to the village. The snake’s body was then cut open and Ms Tiba’s gruesome death was uncovered.
“When they cut open the snake’s belly they found Ms Tiba’s body still intact with all her clothes,” said Faris. “She was swallowed first from her head.”
It’s believed that the victim’s garden is located around 1 kilometre from her house in an area rampant with snakes due to the rocky terrain and many caves in the area.
Reports of humans being killed by pythons are rare however reticulated pythons, found in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia, are known to suffocate their pray before swallowing them whole.
In March 2017, a second human was killed in Indonesia by a python after a 25-year-old man was swallowed whole by one of the large snakes in West Sulawesi province.
