Sesame Street has left viewers divided after boldly addressing the issue of addiction with its newest character, Muppet Karli.
Karli is a six-year-old who lives with foster parents because her mother is dealing with substance addiction.
The iconic show introduced the character as part of its online resource to help disadvantaged children navigate difficult life circumstances.
You can watch some of Karli’s first scenes in the video above and below when Elmo meets Karli’s ‘For Now Parents’.
It includes her Foster Parents singing her a song to tell her there is a safe place for her with them.
Nearly six million children under 11 live with a parent who has a drug addiction in America.
Sesame Street tackling the opioid addiction crisis has me very emotional and grateful today. We perpetuate a lot of shame cycles by not being vulnerable and honest with children. https://t.co/jM9WK6KP0r
