As long as footy has been broadcast on television, commentary teams have almost exclusively been the domain of former players from the men’s game.

And while Channel 7 has recently begun bringing more women into the commentary team, one moment from the first round of finals has drawn criticism from footy journalist Caroline Wilson.

During Saturday’s coverage of Collingwood and West Coast’s elimination final, host James Brayshaw asked Eagles player Xavier Ellis a question about his pregnant wife.

“Isn’t your much, much, much better half expecting?” Brayshaw asked.

Ellis answered: “Yes, at the end of the month. I’ve scheduled that in for Derby Day, so I’ll be watching the races while she gets to work.”

Caroline Wilson took to Channel Nine’s Footy Classified on Monday night to take aim at the remark.

But Soda took exception to Wilson’s comments, telling Jodie this morning that he does not find the comments derogatory.
