This guy is a superstar! … and I don’t mean Billy Joel (although he is too!).
I’m talking about UK performer Angus Munro who takes on the role of Billy (one of many Angus is doing at this year’s Fringe) in a condensed look at Billy Joel’s life with pictures, audio from Billy, talk from Angus (covering Billy’s upbringing, eventful love life and stories behind his songs) and, of course, a selection of Billy’s greatest hits, sung impeccably by Angus with some help from his talented band.
It also helped that we were all, as Angus pointed out, sitting in the most comfortable seats at the Fringe!
Angus is not trying to impersonate Billy but naturally sounds similar to him.
He starts the show emerging from curtains at the side of the stage, running through the crowd and then onto the stage – you are hooked from the start!
Singing as many Billy classics as he can in 90 odd minutes, we were treated to Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song), Uptown Girl, Just The Way You Are, We Didn’t Start The Fire and of course Uptown Girl, among others and Piano Man was worth the price of admission alone!
Not only is Angus a highly talented performer and a great singer, he can also play the keyboard, the harmonica and notably, the saxophone, which he went from singing to playing sometimes in the same breath!
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant showed the flexibility of not only Angus but others in the band changing instruments and was another highlight.
Was the show flawless? … no – there were the occasional lyric issues and he stopped in the middle of She’s Always A Woman To Me, I think, to sort out wrong keyboard note issues but it didn’t matter. Handled professionally and with a supportive crowd behind him, he carried on like nothing had happened.
Like a line from a Billy Joel 80’s hit, ‘You’re only human, you’re supposed to make mistakes!’
In a relatively short show like this, there always going to be songs that disappointingly didn’t make the final cut like Tell Her About It and I would love to have heard him sing Honesty … maybe next time (let’s hope there is a next time!)
