Crayola has released a pack of crayons, pencils and markers with shades representing a more diverse range of skin colours.

The new ‘Colours of the World’ packs include drawing tools that represent 40 global skin tones so children can draw themselves more accurately.

“With the world growing more diverse than ever before, Crayola hopes our new Colors of the World crayons, colored pencils and markers will increase representation and foster a greater sense of belonging and acceptance,” says Crayola LLC CEO Rich Wuerthele.

“We want Colors of the World to support inclusion within creativity and impact how kids express themselves.”

The products – which have already launched in the United States – were well received, with many praising Crayola’s decision to include a more diverse range of skin colours.

“I bought this for my daughter a couple of weeks ago. She love to draw. But one thing I’ve hear her tell me was that she can not find a colour that is the same as her. So when I showed her this lit her eye and she could wait to draw. This is the best. I truly recommend this to all,” one person wrote.

Another added, “As a teacher this is the best set of markers. The kids were beyond excited to be able to draw self-portraits. Every kid could find ‘their’ colour. Everyone needs to add this set to their market collection. Very thankful that Crayola made these.”

Others praised the “breadth of colour” enabling children and adults alike to create more realistic portraits while “matching subtle differences in skin and hair colours.”

However, some are not convinced about the company’s decision, calling it “ridiculous”.

“Leave crayons alone. Let kids be kids without imposing political correctness on them!”

Crayola Colors of the World includes 24 pack Crayons (RRP $3.50), 24 pack Colored Pencils (RRP $11.99) and Coloring Book (RRP $4.00) are available now. Crayola Colors of the World 24 pack Markers (RRP $18.99) will be available from June 2021.
