It might be known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, but now it looks like not all of the meals served at this fast food giant will include this particular meat!

KFC is actually trialling a meat-free option to expand their offerings to vegan and vegetarian customers with the introduction of plant-based fried “chicken” meals.

The company confirmed that a pilot program will test the new food items in the US at one of their Atlanta stores with Beyond Meat vegetarian “chicken”.

“The new plant-based Beyond Fried Chicken offers the finger lickin’ good friend chicken flavour only KFC can deliver as a perfect choice for those searching for plant-based meat options on-the-go,” KFC said.

On offer will be plant-based nuggets and boneless wings, which are set to be the same, finger lickin’ good taste, as the traditional versions.

“KFC Beyond Fried Chicken is so delicious, our customers will find it difficult to tell that it’s plant-based,” KFC president Kevin Hochman said in a statement.

“I think we’ve all heard ‘It tastes like chicken’ – well, our customers are going to be amazed and say, ‘It tastes like Kentucky Fried Chicken!’”

The vegan options kick off in the Cobb Parkway shop in Atlanta today and the only bad news is this is the only location that the items will be available – for now at least.

“KFC has a history of frequently testing unique and craveable menu items as a part of the brand’s food innovation strategy, considering food trends and evaluating customer feedback to KFC’s test offerings,” the chain said.

But hopefully after the tests are done and if they are successful, the plant-based KFC items will be available world wide!
