A fresh report into the mobile spending habits of Aussie shoppers has revealed that we’re preferring to stay home and catch up on Netflix than seeing a concert or going to the movies.

The 2019 PayPal mCommerce Index, commissioned by PayPal and conducted by market research group Ipsos, surveyed 2,000 Aussies and 22,000 consumers globally.

And what was known as FOMO (the fear of missing out) has stepped aside for JOMO – the joy of missing out.

The report found that mobile purchases for stuff like gigs and tickets to live shows decreased by 21% year-on-year from 2018 to 2019. During the same period, spending on subscription services increased, for example, Stan increased by 36% and home delivery services increased by 32%.

We might be staying in heaps more but that didn’t mean we were shopping less.

For a huge 68% of us, the most popular time to shop on our phones is when we’re at home relaxing – about 40% of us shop while we’re watching TV and roughly 38% of us shopped from bed.

The index found a 42% year-on-year increase in shopping on Facebook and Instagram – 27% of those surveyed made purchases through social channels in the last six months.

And last but not least, 1-in-8 of us admitted to shopping on their phones while on the toilet.
