Adelaide could be set to lose another international event of the 2020-21 summer thanks to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic.

The Adelaide International Tennis Tournament is the latest in a string of South Australian events on the chopping block.

Doubt is lingering over the tournament as tennis officials consider playing all international tennis this summer in Melbourne.

The potential move is being considered to circumvent any interstate quarantine requirements, allowing international players to quarantine once in Victoria ahead of the 2021 Australian Open.

Adelaide, Hobart, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney all host international events over the summer.

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley told The Advertiser that the organisers are waiting on the states to give them a final answer.

“We need two things – we need our quarantine and plans approved in each state and we need a commitment that the borders stay open,” Mr Tiley told The Advertiser.

“If we’re unable to get them approved, if we’re unable to get those commitments then we’ve got to seriously look at contracting everything to Melbourne.”
