Mark ‘Soda’ Soderstrom has completed another New York Marathon but promised himself at the finish line he’d never do it again.
The Mix102.3 breakfast host joined Jess Adamson on the phone not long after crossing the line in Manhattan.
Listen below as Soda chats to Jess about his 2019 NYC Marathon…
Soda said the iconic event was “fantastic”.
“It’s an amazing event every time,” he said.
“There’s 50,000 people running, there’s 2 million people on the streets, it’s absolutely crazy,” he said.
Soda managed to run the 42.2kms in less than four hours, which wasn’t his best time ever but achieved his goal of finishing and averaging a speed at better than 10km/h.
Not a bad effort at age 49, having eaten a 4.2kg steak barely a week earlier.
“When I finished I thought to myself I will never ever do this again because it hurt so much and now that I’ve had about 15 minutes to gather my thoughts I can’t wait until next year now,” he said.
“I was in the shower and I started screaming and I realised that my chaffing was that bad that when the water hit it it feels like I’m on absolute fire.”

Soda later confirmed his time was 3hrs and 58mins, while also admitting he suffered from bleeding nipples during the run and his chaffing was “horrendous” from his knees all the way up to his “meat and two”!
