PETA has requested that a roadside memorial be erected along the South-Eastern Freeway as a tribute to chickens killed in a truck accident.

The animal activist group made the written request to SA’s Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.

Earlier this year, two fiery incidents on the freeway led to the deaths of over 5,000 chickens

If the memorial were to go ahead, it would be the first such tribute for animals in Australia.

The roadside memorial would read: “In memory of the chickens who suffered and died at this spot. Try vegan,” along with PETA’s logo.

The department has said that they will release a response to PETA at some stage.

A spokesperson from the state government told The Advertiser that the request submitted by PETA could be classed as advertising.

“Any roadside monument containing organisational branding would generally be considered an advertising sign rather than a memorial, and would therefore likely require development from the local council,” the spokesperson told The Advertiser.
