Mix102.3 listeners will already know what breakfast host Mark ‘Soda’ Soderstrom is like when he sees an opportunity to help a SA community in need.
So it would have been no surprise to see an article pop up in The Advertiser over the weekend that he is leading a campaign to hold a charity cricket match to raise funds for the bushfire appeal.
In South Australia, Kangaroo Island in particular, has been devastated by bushfires with two lives lost and more than 50 homes destroyed.
The latest news we can reveal is that Soda will be cutting short his holidays to attempt to make the cricket match and major fundraiser a reality by returning to the Mix102.3 airwaves on Friday morning.
“I’ve had a chat with a few different organisations, people have come on board pretty quickly,” he told The Advertiser of his plans for the cricket match.
“One thing we’ve noticed with everything that we’ve done with the community is that people get right behind these sort of things.
“It was a great idea by a guy called Scott… I saw that and thought that’s a fantastic idea, I know Adelaide will turn up and you will get 50,000 people there (at Adelaide Oval).
“I think it would be a wonderful way to help people who have struggled through all of this and to show some recognition for the selfless and amazing work that the fireys have done and everybody fighting these fires have been doing.
“I’m confident in the community, anything we have done in the past the Adelaide and South Australian community are fantastic in supporting each other so I’m confident we can organise something pretty soon.”
The Crows, the Power, the Adelaide Oval SMA (Stadium Management Authority) and the SACA (South Australian Cricket Association) have all been made aware of the idea for the cricket match and indicated their willingness to explore the idea via The Advertiser article.
Soda will be joined on the Mix102.3 airwaves by guest co-host Erin Phillips for around three months before Jodie Oddy returns from maternity leave in April.
Erin is one of Australia’s most successful athletes, having captained the Crows AFLW side to two premierships and forged a successful basketball career throughout the globe including winning an Olympic silver medal. She is married to Tracy Gahan and have three children together including twins!
Soda and Erin had been due to return to the radio airwaves on January 20 but there’s no holding Soda back when he’s got an idea to help others!
Hear Soda live on Mix102.3 for the first time in 2020 on Friday morning (10 January).
Last year, Soda and co-host Jess Adamson put on SA’s Greatest Game Of Backyard Cricket to support the Childhood Cancer Association and CanTeen, and particularly two youngsters who had been supported by those charities. It was a huge success with the likes of Darren Lehmann, Jason Gillespie, Clive Lloyd, Shaun Tait, Premier Steven Marshall, Travis Boak, and Tony Modra all taking part. Watch the highlights below….
