South Australian police have revealed more than 1,000 people have crossed the border from Victoria in a bid to enter the state before their stage 3 restrictions came into place.
A hard border came into effect between the states at 11.59 pm on Wednesday, banning all entry from Victoria unless an exemption is granted.
South Australian residents are allowed to return but will be forced to isolate for 14 days.
In the day before the shutdown, entries from Victoria accounted for half of the states border entries.
Between 1am on Tuesday and 11.59pm Wednesday, a total of 1,200 people came into South Australia from Victoria.
Other states, territories and overseas arrivals totalled 867 in the same period.
Since the hard border came into effect, 226 have entered the state from Victoria.
