Up to a dozen Coles supermarkets in Melbourne have reportedly installed tablet sized computers on top of its self-service checkouts.

The cameras have been installed directly above the self-service monitor, according to the Maroondah Leader, and shoppers can now see themselves scanning items on the screen.

A Coles spokesperson has said “While the large majority of our customers do the right thing, it’s not fair that a small number of people get away with doing the wrong thing.’’

The presence of the cameras has been well signed posted and meets the legal requirements of filming.

Eight million self-service transactions are made each week at Coles and according to the company, undercover security officers will also be deployed in their stores.
