Firefighting hero Kat Robinson-Williams will continue to defend her state against devastating bushfires despite being criticised for stepping into the line of duty while pregnant.

The 23-year-old posted a now viral photo on Instagram of herself in firefighting kit on her way to a fire in Taree, NSW.

“For all the females on the ground in NSW right now. We stand together we stand proud!!” she wrote.

“Yes I am a Firefighter
No I’m not a man
Yes I am a female
Yes I am pregnant
Yes I am going to the fires
And yes I’ll be alright
No I won’t just stay behind
No I don’t care if you don’t like it.”

Kat’s post was met with a wave of support for her defiant stance, which came a day after a furore erupted on Twitter as some users tried to claim all firefighters as male.

“LEGEND! You’re an inspiration to girls all over the world!” wrote one supporter to Kat on her Instagram.

But Kat also had to endure comments from those who thought she should not be fighting fires while 13 weeks pregnant.

“Just cause you can, doesn’t mean you should! As a mother her priority is to her baby. It’s admirable she wants to help but it isn’t the time,” wrote Giulia on news.com.au.

“Nice sentiment but I think that’s a bad idea. Not even sure they should allow it,” added Cassie.

Kat has been resolute in her pride at taking her unborn bub to the fires, posting a photo of her ultrasound with the caption: “13 weeks pregnant and still going strong. Still going to fires. Little firefighter in the making!! First fire for Bub is tomorrow mornings strike team to mid coast. Safe to say ‘fighting fires before you were born’🔥🔥👩🏻‍🚒👨🏻‍🚒”

Since her posts have gained national attention through the media, Kat has reposted many of the positive responses she has received including comments calling her an “inspiring woman” and a “true Aussie woman”.
