A price dispute is to blame for a lack of pet food across supermarket shelves.

A union official has said that Pedigree and Whiska’s items, made by Mars Petcare, have vanished from both Woolworths and Coles over the past week.

National Union of Workers regional organiser Mark Schmidt, said “Mars has had a price rise with its product and Woolworths and Coles are trying to get in and get their cut and my understanding is that’s why there has been a hold-off,”

“The warehouses are full, so it’s not that there’s a shortage in the product. It’s the fun and games that go with a product price rise.”

Notices across the supermarkets say “We regret to advise that due to unforeseen circumstances some of our Whiskas, Pedigree, My Dog and Dine pet food products may be temporarily unavailable. “We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

A Woolworths spokesman said “It’s not our practice to make public comment on our commercial arrangements with suppliers,” he said.

“As stated yesterday, we’re working with the supplier to improve availability for our customers as quickly as possible.”

It is expected the products will return to shelves by the end of the week.
