All this week on Hayley & Max are celebrating your Suburban Superstars. The local legends everyone knows.
Johnny Haysman
Most Adelaide locals couldn’t pinpoint the first moment they saw Haysman – but would instantly recognise the mysterious, rollerskating figure seen moving up and down Rundle Mall 10 times a day, almost every day. Dressed in a lycra leotard and a tutu or speedos with a koala-shaped backpack, Haysman would dance his way through the city – picking shoppers and sightseers at random to interact with. Haysman has also become a stalwart of Adelaide’s art scene, bringing his sartorial flair to events large and small. But despite being oft-recognised, few are aware of Haysman’s upbringing. He grew up in Clare, a town around 100km north of Adelaide, where he lived until finishing school. Since then, Haysman has worked in a number of vineyards in the state’s Clare Valley region – best known for its award-winning Riesling. In recent years, Haysman has kept a lower profile – returning to his home town in 2005 to work again on the vineyards.
