The Federal Government is assuring Australians that our home turf is safe following a potential terror attack at the US-Canadian border.

According to authorities, a vehicle was speeding through a checkpoint when it flipped before exploding, killing the two male occupants inside.

“The FBI Buffalo Field Office is investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the U.S. and Canada in Niagara Falls,” the FBI said in a statement.

“The FBI is coordinating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation.

“As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say”.

According to Fox News, authorities are investigating whether it was an attempted terrorist attack, with reports there were explosives in the vehicle at the time.

“We are taking this extraordinarily seriously,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

“We are following up to try and get as many answers as rapidly as possible.

“Additional measures are being contemplated and activated at all border crossings across the country.”

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said she can understand why Australians might be feeling a little worried.

“Our security agencies always make sound judgments about what is occurring in Australia and work very hard to keep us all safe,” Ms Wong said.
